Masala’ is a mixture of ground spices used in Indian cooking while ‘chai’ means tea, a word often used among the Indian community.

Masala chai is a blend of milk and various spices that has lots of benefits. Ingredients like cardamom, cinnamon, cloves and ginger have anti-inflammatory properties that can help relief pains and aches. These spices can also help boost your immunity and act as a defence line to fight of infections and combat common illnesses.

Growing up in an Indian household, we always had masala chai ingredients in the kitchen. Luckily for you, this writer has just the perfect recipe for a cup of masala chai for any occasion, no matter the weather. So easy that you can just put everything in a tea bag and immerse in some hot milk.

Check out the recipe below!

Ingredients: (1 Serving)

preparation time: 5 minutes

cooking time: 10 minutes

5 green cardamom pods

5 whole cloves

3 black peppercorns (optional)

1 thumb-size ginger (skin off)

1 tablespoon loose leaf black tea (or 1 teabags)

1 tablespoon sugar

¼ cup water

1 cup whole milk

Instructions:

1. Add all the dry spices along with the ginger and lightly crush it in a mortar and pestle.

2. Heat the crushed spices on a non-stick pot for 2 minutes until fragrant

3. Add water to the pot and let it simmer for 5 minutes

4. Add milk and the loose tea leaves/tea bag to the pot, stir and bring to boil. Reduce the heat to a low simmer for 2 minutes.

5. Stir in some sugar to your preferred sweetness.

6. Simmer until the milk becomes frothy but be careful not to let it overboil.

7. Pour in a mug with a strainer and serve it while it is still hot.
