This is a type of attack known as skimming.

By registering for Google Analytics accounts and injecting these accounts’ tracking code into the websites’ source code, attackers can then collect users’ credit card details. There have been about two dozen online stores worldwide that were compromised using this method!

Web skimming is a popular practice used by attackers to steal credit card information details from payment pages on online stores’ websites - where they inject pieces of code into the source code of the website, then it collects the data inputted by visitors to the site like their payment account logins or credit card numbers...

So, how can we avoid these malicious attacks?

  1. Monitor your account statements and turn on transaction notifications if offered by your bank.

  2. Use virtual card numbers for online shopping if your bank offers them or pay with your mobile phone.

  3. Pay with an alternative online wallet service that doesn’t require you to input your payment card details directly into the checkout page.

Be careful when shopping online, and always use an online shopping service that you know and trust!
