Every 16 September, Malaysians celebrate Hari Malaysia, the day that marks the historic moment when Sabah and Sarawak officially joined Malaya in 1963 to form Malaysia.
It is more than just a public holiday as it reminds us how different states, cultures, and communities came together as one nation.

One event that reflects this spirit beautifully is Keretapi Sarong. Malaysians put on sarongs or traditional costumes and gather at train stations, filling up the LRT, MRT, monorail, and KTM. What starts as an ordinary commute soon transforms into a lively celebration of unity, heritage, and joy.
This year, the celebration became even more memorable when a marching band surprised passengers on the train. In a video shared by netizen @cikguhzura, the conductor gave the signal and the group began playing Keranamu Malaysia. The familiar patriotic tune immediately lifted the atmosphere, with passengers smiling, cheering, and even singing along.
On another train along the Kempas–Kluang line, a group of Malaysians turned their journey into a dance floor. Their energy showed that Keretapi Sarong is not only about traditional attire but also about celebrating togetherness in fun and meaningful ways.
Many who joined the event shared their excitement online, while those who missed it said they look forward to being part of it in 2026. One netizen wrote that it was a wonderful way to celebrate national unity and diversity. Another expressed regret that they had not heard of it earlier, as they would have loved to join.
These moments are a reminder of what being Malaysian means. It is about standing side by side despite our differences, cherishing our shared traditions, and finding joy in the simple things that bring us together.
Selamat Hari Malaysia, korang!
