Malaysian Shares Touching Story Behind Johor Road Named After Her Grandfather's Honour

A touching moment unfolded recently on XiaoHongShu, where Malaysian netizen Alicia Tien shared a glimpse of a special road in Kluang, Johor — one named in honour of her late grandfather, Tien Min Wah.

Alicia expressed her pride and gratitude in a heartfelt post, revealing that the road had been named after her grandfather back in 1977, recognising his lifelong dedication to the community. As a politician and respected leader of the Chinese community, Tien Min Wah was known for his selfless service and constant efforts to uplift society at a time when few Chinese leaders received such an honour.

She further shared that her grandfather had been awarded several medals by the Sultan of Johor, a testament to his remarkable contributions.

Two decades after her grandfather’s passing, Alicia returned to her hometown to pay her respects and visit the road that bears his name. 

Standing there, she felt a powerful connection to his enduring spirit of dedication, "In Malaysia, it is not uncommon for roads named after Chinese figures to eventually be renamed. 

“I truly hope that my grandfather’s name will continue to live on through this road," she expressed.

Reflecting on his legacy, Alicia added that her grandfather's story continues to inspire her. As a Malaysian Chinese, she feels a deep sense of responsibility and pride, guided by the values he upheld throughout his life.
