Former US President Donald Trump has wrapped up his brief but eventful visit to Malaysia, departing for Japan on 27 October after attending the 47th ASEAN Summit in Kuala Lumpur. During his one-day stay, Trump took part in trade discussions and witnessed the signing of the Cambodia-Thailand Peace Agreement, marking a milestone moment for regional diplomacy.
Before leaving, Trump posted on social media, describing Malaysia and his visit as “great and vibrant.” His post quickly drew attention, with many noting his rare words of praise for another nation.
US Ambassador to Malaysia, Edgard D. Kagan, later echoed those sentiments during a press conference on 28 October. He said Trump was deeply impressed by Malaysia’s hospitality and the progress made during his visit. According to Kagan, the trip symbolised a renewed chapter in Malaysia–US relations, built on shared economic and diplomatic goals.
“The President told Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim how glad he was that the world could see how amazing Malaysia is,” Kagan said. “Both countries are now working to strengthen cooperation through the US–Malaysia Reciprocal Trade Agreement, which benefits both sides.”
Trump’s visit also coincided with a major regional development: the signing of the KL Peace Agreement between Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet. The agreement officially ended a border conflict that had escalated into military clashes in July, before Malaysia stepped in to mediate and secure a ceasefire.
Kagan highlighted Malaysia’s role as a key peace broker and commended both Anwar and Trump for their leadership. “This visit shows that Malaysia is not only a beautiful country but also a reliable partner to the United States,” he said. “Even though we may not always agree on everything, the bond between our two nations remains strong.”

Trump’s short stay may have lasted only a day, but it reinforced Malaysia’s growing influence on the world stage — and reminded both nations of the value of cooperation built on mutual respect and diplomacy.
