Some Malaysians have been claiming that their COVID-19 self-test kits are useless and malfunctioning by using tap water as a sample.
In the video, these home experimenters demonstrated that their kits produced 'positive' results when they poured plain tap water into the sample wells.
Some believe that the government and test kit manufacturers are working together to deceive the public by selling ineffective detection kits, which is absolutely ridiculous.
Since the video had gone viral, it had been taken down as netizens quickly flagged the video as fake news.
The Medical Device Authority Malaysia (MDA), a regulatory organization under the Ministry of Health (MOH), recently resolved the issue by approving the usage of the medical device.
"The way the kit is used and demonstrated in a two-minute video does not follow the guidelines as stated in the label and leaflet included in the test kit," they said in a statement on February 10th.
They advised consumers to use the test kits for the intended purpose and instructions ONLY, or the result will be misleading and pointless.

The MDA also expressed their worry over the circulation of the video and will conduct an investigation to prevent further confusion among the public.
What a waste of a perfectly good test!
