Are we canceling emojis now, too?
Some Gen-Zs have labeled the ‘thumbs up’ emoji as passive-aggressive, saying that it’s “hostile” and “super rude,” and even hurtful.

Apparently, some of these Gen Z’s were taken aback by its use at the workplace and explained that the person using the emoji is perceived as unfriendly and disinterested. However, people on Reddit argued that the emoji is simply a short-form way of saying “okay” or “got it.”
A user on Reddit, @Dry_Interaction6220 asked other users online if they, too, found the thumbs up emoji to be rude. The user explained that their colleagues have used the emoji when reacting to messages.
The user also added that they prefer the use of the ‘heart’ emoji or reply with simple words of acknowledgement like “Great!” or “Thanks!”
Another Redditor, who replied to the post explains that if a coworker sends you the thumbs up emoji, it usually means “Okay” or “Thanks,” and that people should take a step back to realize that they might’ve been reading too deeply into it.
“Texting a thumbs up could be a quick response for someone who is busy or just a response to a conversation without the need for a lengthy response,” another person said.
