Elephants have long been a symbol of strength, intelligence, and grace. In Malaysia, these gentle giants are part of our natural heritage, roaming freely in places like Pahang, Terengganu, and Sabah.
They play a vital role in maintaining the balance of our ecosystems by helping to shape the forests they live in. Because their numbers have declined due to habitat loss and poaching, elephants are protected under Malaysian law, ensuring that future generations can continue to witness their beauty in the wild.

Baby elephants, or calves, are especially fascinating. Known for their curious nature and playful energy, they are also highly social, forming strong bonds with their herd. Just like human toddlers, they can be a little stubborn, easily frustrated when things do not go their way but always in the most endearing manner.
One recent video perfectly captures this adorable side of a calf. Shared by Thailand’s animal rescue team Tusker Shelter on Instagram, the clip shows a baby elephant determined to sit on a folding chair. With tiny legs awkwardly trying to climb up, the young jumbo gives it several tries, only to have the chair tip over. Unfazed, the calf pushes the fallen chair as though trying to set it up again, its little “tantrum” drawing laughter from nearby humans who were filming.
The caption alongside the video read, “Just hope to sit quietly, but the chair cannot tell. A small wish for calmness, met with a hesitant chair.” Viewers from around the world flooded the comments with affection, with one noting, “Baby elephant needs a bigger chair, so cute,” while another gushed, “So pure-hearted and innocent baby. Precious. Hugs and kisses.”
It is a charming reminder that elephants, whether in the wild or in a rescue centre, deserve our respect, care, and protection. After all, these precious creatures are not just part of Thailand’s or Malaysia’s wildlife; they are a shared responsibility for all of us to safeguard.
