COVID-19 is slowly making its way to all corners of the world and while many are being super cautious with their hygiene, the spread of the virus is still occurring, especially in Italy.

According to the Civil Protection agency, Italy has recorded 7,375 confirmed cases with 1,247 confirmed in just 24 hours.

The total number of infections has leapt 25% from 5,883 cases to 7,357 cases, the agency confirmed.

Officials have recorded 133 deaths from the virus, bringing the total to 366 fatalities in just one day.

Italy is now the country with the second highest number of fatalities after China.

“The jump in figures comes as millions adapt to radical measures introduced on Sunday in an attempt to contain the outbreak,” BBC reports. “Up to 16 million people in Lombardy and 14 provinces need special permission to travel under new quarantine rules.”

The closure of schools, gyms, museums, nightclubs and other public venues across Italy, was also announced by Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte.

"We want to guarantee the health of our citizens. We understand that these measures will impose sacrifices, sometimes small and sometimes very big," Prime Minister Conte said as he announced the measures in the middle of Saturday night.

The restrictions will be in place until 3rd April.

Italy is known to have one of the world’s oldest populations. This fact has contributed to the number of fatalities in the country as the virus is particularly dangerous to the elderly and those with underlying health conditions.

While the virus seems to affect those of weaker bodies, this does not mean that you shouldn’t be taking precautions with your health.

Be sure to always wash your hands, use hand sanitisers, and wear a facemask if you’re not feeling well. Avoid public spaces if you can and be sure to be aware of your surroundings.
