In Malaysia, few examinations carry as much weight as the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM).
Often seen as a crucial stepping stone towards higher education and future careers, SPM is more than just an exam, it’s a rite of passage that marks the transition from school life to adulthood for thousands of students every year. For many families, especially those from humble backgrounds, strong SPM results open doors to opportunities once only dreamed of.
As SPM 2023 results were announced, social media flooded with a wave of emotions. Some shared joyous celebrations, others posted heartfelt tributes to parents and teachers. Among the many stories, a few stood out and truly touched our hearts, none more so than the story of 18-year-old Nur Qalidah Farhana Mohd. Azman from Johor.

While most students gathered with their families to check their results, Nur Qalidah was hard at work at a small beverage stall at the Pagoh R&R stop. Between serving customers, she found a quiet moment to check her phone, and discovered she had achieved an incredible 9As.
Overwhelmed with disbelief and excitement, she immediately called her mother, Endon Dol Alim, a school sweeper, and her brother to share the news. Her mother’s tears of joy over the phone said it all, the years of hard work and sacrifice had paid off.
As the youngest of five siblings, Nur Qalidah had been working at the stall since Ramadan, saving every sen she could towards her dream of studying Electrical Engineering at Universiti Teknologi Petronas (UTP).
Despite her parents, who work tirelessly as a sweeper and a housekeeper, never promising her rewards for good grades, their unwavering prayers and encouragement were more than enough for her, “My mother always reminded me to study hard and not end up like her and my father. I still hold on to those words,” she shared, with tears welling in her eyes.
Her story, and so many others like hers, are powerful reminders that behind every SPM certificate is a journey of grit, determination, and love.
To all the SPM candidates, no matter what your results are, congratulations on reaching this important milestone. Your journey is just beginning, and Malaysia is proud of you!
