Starting in 2023, all workers at food and beverages (F&B) outlets in Selangor will be required to wear face masks.

The Selayang Municipal Council (MPS) wrote on Facebook that the mandate extends to ALL food handlers and cooks in restaurants as well as hawker stalls, “Those who disregards this directive, which is also a requirement for obtaining a business license will face compound fines.”

Meanwhile, the Kajang Municipal Council (MPKJ) announced earlier this month that it will strengthen enforcement of the mandatory mask mandate for restaurant workers and hawkers starting next year.

MPKj council president Najmuddin Jemain stated that the ruling of mandatory facemasks for food handlers and cooks in Selangor was decided on 7 September during the state government’s council meeting.

"This is one of several initiatives to ensure that workers handling food and beverages are accustomed to wearing masks as a means of ensuring cleanliness at eateries," he explained.

The announcement has divided social media users. Many took to the comment section to support the new enforcement, while others questioned its necessity.
