Sarawak is home to vast river systems, with 40 major river basins spread across more than 123,000 square kilometres. These waterways have shaped the state’s identity for generations, and now, a new idea aims to blend tradition with modern convenience.

The plan involves testing electric-powered sampans that can be booked through an app and paid for without cash, offering a modern upgrade to a long-standing mode of transport.
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said that Kuching will be the testing ground for the Grab Electric Sampan Proof of Concept, which reimagines the classic river ride with clean energy and digital accessibility.
He also highlighted ongoing river-related initiatives, including the RM10 billion Sarawak Water Supply Grid Programme that aims to provide treated water to everyone by 2030, along with riverfront improvements in towns such as Sibu, Kapit, Simanggang, Marudi and Limbang.
Sarawak Transport Minister Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin said that innovation is key in keeping river transport relevant. The six-month pilot will include eight pick-up and drop-off points along the Kuching Waterfront.
Lee added that this project shows how technology can revitalise traditional river transport and make it sustainable and accessible for all.
More updates are expected as the pilot progresses.
