PSA: Malaysia's Monsoon Transition Phase – Stay Safe as Flood Risks Rise

The Meteorology Department of Malaysia has officially announced that the Monsoon Transition Phase will begin on September 24, 2024, and continue until November 2024.

This phase marks the end of the Southwest Monsoon, which has been in effect since May 17, 2024. As a result, Malaysia will experience more frequent thunderstorms, heavy rains, and strong winds, particularly in the late afternoons and early evenings.

With the increased rain, the risk of flash floods will also rise, especially in flood-prone areas like the northern regions, where incidents like the one in Kedah have already started to occur.

Key Safety Reminders:

• Avoid floodwaters: Floods may appear harmless, but they can hide dangerous debris, contaminants, or sudden currents. Avoid wading or playing in floodwaters, especially children.

• Stay informed: Regularly check weather updates from the Meteorology Department and heed warnings from local authorities.

• Prepare for emergencies: Ensure your home is stocked with essentials, including bottled water, non-perishable food, a first aid kit, and emergency contact numbers.

• Road safety: If you're driving and encounter flooded roads, turn back. Even shallow floodwaters can sweep away vehicles.
