PM Anwar Ibrahim Calls for AI Education Expansion in Schools and Universities

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has directed that artificial intelligence (AI) education be expanded to all universities and secondary schools across Malaysia.

According to a Berita Harian report, Anwar emphasised the importance of strengthening AI knowledge among younger generations, as Malaysia’s current proficiency in the field remains limited.

“AI will be a key factor in determining whether Malaysia can enhance productivity, particularly in emerging industries.

“Despite having a clear policy on AI, its mastery is still lacking. Therefore, all educational institutions, including secondary schools and universities, must prioritise AI education. I believe our ability to harness AI will directly impact Malaysia’s productivity growth,” he stated.

He further noted that AI expertise among local talents is a crucial factor for major investors looking to enter the Malaysian market.

In May last year, Anwar launched Malaysia’s first AI faculty at the Malaysia Artificial Intelligence Nexus 2024 (MY AI Nexus 2024) exhibition.

Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) became the first institution in the country to establish the faculty, which has already enrolled 97 students in its Bachelor of Artificial Intelligence full-time programme for the 2024/2025 academic session.
