The Malaysian Association for the Blind (MAB) successfully hosted the “MyFutureJobs Visually Impaired Persons’ Career Day 2024” yesterday, drawing substantial attention to the talents and 134 visually impaired individuals for employment interviews held at Dewan Ismail MD. Salleh, located within the Malaysian Association for the Blind Komplex in Brickfields, Kuala Lumpur.
The event provided a unique platform for visually impaired individuals to engage with potential employers, namely Nando’s, Aoen M Sdn Bhd, Maybank, Go Coach, Global Sdn Bhd, Always Marketing, Genashtim, Aloft KL, Bilabila retail, Tata Consultancy, 99 Speedmart, Roche Services, and Sunway Resorts, and showcased their remarkable capabilities and resilience.
The event, which ran from 10:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., saw the participation of a large number of attendees, including esteemed guests, employers, technology exhibitors, and members of the visually impaired community. The Minister of Human Resources, YB Tuan Steven Sim Chee Keong, honored the event with his presence and delivered an inspiring keynote address. The Minister's speech emphasized the government’s commitment to fostering an inclusive workforce and highlighted the significant contributions of visually impaired individuals to various industries without discrimination.
During his address, YB Tuan Steven Sim Chee Keong remarked, "The MyFutueJobs Visually Impaired Persons' Career Day is more than an event; it's a movement towards inclusivity and empowerment. By providing this platform, we are not only recognizing the skills and talents of our visually impaired friends but also promoting their full participation in the job market."
The Career Day included an extensive career exhibition featuring various technologies and tools beneficial to visually impaired employees. Attendees had the opportunity to explore live demonstrations of the latest assistive technologies, designed to enhance independence and productivity in the workplace. The exhibition area also hosted various agencies and employers, each offering insights and potential employment opportunities for visually impaired job seekers.
A notable feature of the event was the demonstration sessions where visually impaired individuals showcased their skills in utilizing cutting-edge devices, such as Braille display tools, screen readers, and accessible applications on smartphones. These demonstrations highlighted the potential of technology to bridge gaps and enable visually impaired individuals to thrive in professional environments.
In addition to the career exhibition, the event included performances by visually impaired individuals, underscoring their diverse talents beyond the workplace. The celebration of their abilities aimed to challenge misconceptions and stereotypes about disability and capability.
MAB’s Chief Executive Officer, YH Dato' George Thomas, expressed his satisfaction with the event’s success, stating, "We are thrilled with the outcome of the Visually Impaired Persons' Career Day 2024.
