Malaysia Plans to Ban Social Media Accounts for Children Under 16 Starting 2026

The Malaysian government is preparing to introduce a new rule that would stop anyone under 16 from creating social media accounts as early as next year. Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said the move follows a Cabinet decision to reduce cybercrime and protect young users from online dangers, including sexual predators.

He explained that the government hopes all social media platforms will follow this requirement once it is officially implemented. The aim is to create a safer online environment for children.

Looking at age limits used in other countries

The government is also reviewing age-restriction models used in countries like Australia. This includes studying how other nations enforce these rules and deciding which approach would suit Malaysia best.

Fahmi said that different countries have different enforcement methods, and Malaysia is studying the most effective way to ensure children under 16 are blocked from signing up for social media accounts.

eKYC verification being considered

One of the ideas being explored is to require platforms to use eKYC verification. This process would involve users verifying their identity with official documents such as MyKad, passports, or MyDigital ID before creating an account.

Fahmi said the government expects platforms to begin using this system next year. He added that if the government, regulators, and parents work together, Malaysia can move towards an internet that is fast, accessible, affordable, and most importantly safe for children and families.
