Government Is Considering 10-Year Driving Licence Renewals, Says Transport Minister Anthony Loke

Transport minister, Anthony Loke said that the government is considering allowing drivers’ licences to be renewed for up to ten years.

According to The Star, he said that officials from the Ministry of Transportation have been instructed to research the proposal’s viability, “To get Malaysians to renew their licence for longer durations, perhaps we should offer discounts for those who renew their licence for ten years.

“There is a possibility that this might happen in the near future,” he said on Wednesday (22 February).

Loke also added that a study on the current road tax system is being done by the Ministry of Transport to cut down on the costs.

"We must recognise that the government receives a significant amount of revenue from road taxes— which is nearly RM3 billion.

“Nonetheless, I will give it some thought,” Loke continued. "Thus, no decision has been made yet."

As of right now, Malaysian driver’s licences can be renewed once a year or for five years.
