Goodbyes are never easy, so brace yourself for this one - the Hello Kitty town in Johor will be closing down! Everyone’s favourite cat brought seven years of fun and joy to those who visited the Hello Kitty Town in Puteri Harbour, but that journey will come to an end on 31st December 2019.

Liow Cai Tung, head of the committee in charge of Johor’s Tourism, Women, Family and Community development told Malay Mail, “I believe it (the closure) will only have a small impact on the Visit Johor Year 2020 campaign (kicking off on 1st January 2020) and will not affect overall tourist arrivals to the state”.

“The state government does not depend on one particular type of tourism product,” she added in response to reports that tourism activity may drop after the closure.

The Johor Raya assemblyman said that the decision to stop operations was made by a private company.

Malay Mail reported that Ms Liow also said the theme park was closing down due to lack of response over the past few years.

Costing over RM 110 million (US$26.2 million), the theme park was launched in 2012 but bringing in visitors had been a problem.

The doors may close, but Hello Kitty will live on always in our hearts.
