Terengganu Grandfather Builds Floating Pen to Shield Livestock from Monsoon Floods

A 73-year-old man from Kampung Pengkalan Ajal, Ajil, in Terengganu has taken matters into his own hands to protect his livestock from the impending Northeast Monsoon, building a sheltered raft to keep his animals safe.

Mohd Sulong, who faced significant financial losses in the past due to flood waters destroying his livestock, decided to construct a raft-based pen despite his own health challenges.

Having suffered a stroke earlier in the year, Mohd's efforts were slowed, but his determination remained strong. He used RM500 of his own funds to build the structure, which can house up to 150 chickens and ducks, using wood and large barrels to create floating floats.

"I built this pen on my own, as it was the most affordable option. It took me four months to finish, as I wasn’t in the best health," said Mohd. "I worked on it little by little, always rushing against the clock, knowing the floods could arrive at any moment."

In addition to the pen, Mohd also constructed floating racks made from bamboo, which he uses to store household appliances like his washing machine and fridge. Each year, his home is inundated with floodwaters, sometimes rising up to chest height, causing significant damage to his belongings.

"Floods happen at least twice a year, usually at the start and end of the monsoon season," he explained. "In the past, I built a platform inside the house, but the water would sometimes rise higher, ruining my things. I just hope this year, my important belongings will remain safe. I can’t afford to keep replacing broken appliances every year."

Other residents in the area are also preparing for the monsoon, with many constructing similar raft storage systems outside their homes. However, Mohd, who lives with his wife, explained that the cost of such structures was prohibitive for him.

With the Northeast Monsoon officially beginning on 5 November and expected to last until March 2025, the Malaysian Meteorological Department (METMalaysia) has forecasted heavy rains in multiple states, including Terengganu, Kelantan, Pahang, Johor, Sarawak, and Sabah. Up to seven heavy rainfall episodes are expected during this period, making Mohd’s proactive measures all the more critical in safeguarding both his livelihood and his home.
