Malaysian students have something to look forward to this October as Deepavali brings not just lights and celebrations, but also an extended school break.
The Festival of Lights falls on Monday, 20 October 2025, and the Ministry of Education (MOE) has announced extra school holidays in conjunction with the celebration, giving students and teachers more time to enjoy the festive season with their families.

Extra holidays for most states
Based on the Academic Calendar for the 2025/2026 session, all schools across Malaysia except Sarawak will enjoy additional days off surrounding the Deepavali celebration.
Here’s the breakdown:
-
Group A (Kedah, Kelantan, Terengganu): Schools will be closed on 19 October (Sunday) and 21 October (Tuesday).
-
Group B (Melaka, Johor, Negeri Sembilan, Pahang, Perak, Perlis, Penang, Sabah, Selangor, Federal Territories of Kuala Lumpur, Labuan, and Putrajaya): Schools will be closed on 21 October (Tuesday) and 22 October (Wednesday).
Sarawak will observe a one-day holiday on Deepavali itself, which falls on Monday, 20 October.
A well-deserved long weekend!
With these additions, students in most states will enjoy five consecutive days off, perfect for family gatherings, festive travels, or simply taking a break before classes resume.
The MOE’s decision aims to give educators and students alike the chance to celebrate Deepavali more meaningfully. You can view the full schedule through the Academic Calendar for the 2025/2026 session, released by the ministry on 6 October.
