Just over a month after winning the coveted Eisner Award (the comic industry’s equivalent of the Oscars), local comic creator Erica Eng has once again attracted international recognition for her webcomic Fried Rice.
The story is now up for a Harvey Award, another set of honours given for achievement in comic books, and also voted by industry professionals.
In comparison to the Eisner Awards, you could say the Harvey Awards are the Golden Globes of the comic industry.
Eng took to Twitter to share the news, along with a list of her fellow nominees:
In case you didn’t know, Fried Rice is set in early 2015 in Malaysia and is loosely based on Eng's own experiences after graduating high school.
The story follows Min, a young artist from Batu Pahat, Johor, as she visits her cousin Lilly in Kuala Lumpur.
Both girls hope to travel overseas to pursue their tertiary education, but although Lilly will return home after completing her studies, Min is planning to leave Malaysia forever.
The Edge described Fried Rice as a very relatable story to Malaysians especially, saying the simple scenes make you wonder if they were extracted from your own memory.

All the best, Erica!
