The Ministry of Works Malaysia (KKR) recently announced that the main stretch of the North-South Highway, from Juru in Penang to Skudai, Johor will finally support the radio frequency identification (RFID) toll payments with the opening of RFID specific lanes starting January 15th, 2022.
PLUS Malaysia planned to enable the system at all its toll plazas by January next year.
In a statement that was shared on its official Twitter page, the ministry stated that RFID toll booths will be accessible to light private vehicles (Class 1). Other than sedans, hatchbacks, and MPVs, vans and pickup trucks fall into the same category as well.
They also said that the implementation is in line with the Intelligent Transport System Blueprint, which includes the Multi-Lane Free-Flow (MLFF) system.
The implementation also aimed to reduce congestion at toll plazas and to reduce the risk of getting exposed by COVID-19.
