Astro Joins Global Anti-Piracy Giant ACE to Strengthen Fight Against Digital Piracy

Astro has taken its anti-piracy mission to the global stage by officially joining the Alliance for Creativity and Entertainment (ACE) — the world’s largest coalition dedicated to tackling content piracy.

Since its launch in 1996, Astro has become Malaysia’s leading content and entertainment company, reaching 64% of Malaysian households through a vast ecosystem of pay and free-to-air TV services, OTT platforms, and an extensive library of over 100,000 VOD titles, including Astro Originals, major live sports, and 147 live TV channels.

But beyond entertainment, Astro has been at the forefront of the country’s fight against piracy. As a key member of the Malaysian Cybercrime Task Force, chaired by the Deputy Prime Minister, Astro has spearheaded industry-government collaborations, educated the public, and achieved significant enforcement wins. These include removing over 26,000 illegal streaming device and service listings, shutting down 327 Telegram piracy groups with 12 million subscribers, and setting landmark legal precedents to protect creators’ rights.

“For us at Astro, fighting piracy is not just to safeguard our bottom line but to protect the value of creativity and the people who bring stories to life,” said Euan Smith, Group CEO of Astro. “By joining ACE, we’re stepping into a larger arena. This collaboration gives us the strength of a global alliance while ensuring local voices and creators are safeguarded.”

ACE Chairman and Motion Picture Association CEO Charles Rivkin praised the move, calling Astro “a key player and partner in the fight against piracy” and noting the company’s track record in enforcement and public awareness.

Astro’s membership also makes it the third ACE member from the Asia-Pacific region this year, a sign of the region’s growing influence in the global push to protect creativity and ensure audiences enjoy content safely and securely.
