14 Inmates Tested Positive For COVID-19 A Month Before Being Released

A total of 14 inmates at the Seberang Perai Prison, Jawi, waiting to be released within a month, have tested positive for COVID-19 on Sunday (1 November).

According to BERNAMA, its director, Zulkifli Abdul Manah said that the prisoners were confirmed positive after undergoing their second screening conducted by the Ministry of Health (KKM).

He added: “It is now a prison procedure that prisoners waiting to be released have to undergo a COVID-19 screening test to ensure that they are free of the pandemic so that the virus does not spread outside when they are released.”

The inmates who tested positive for the virus are in stable condition and have been placed with other inmates who were confirmed positive. They will only be released after they are fully recovered. 

As of Monday (2 November), the Seberang Perai Prison has recorded a total of 270 positive COVID-19 cases, including three cases among the prison officers. 

An Enhanced MCO (EMCO) has been implemented at the Seberang Perai prison on 22 October and is set to continue until Wednesday (4 November).
