When anyone talks about going to Penang, the first thing that comes to mind is the food, museums, and street arts, right?
Now that we’ve mentioned street arts - Penang is known for its many iconic wall murals with amazing stories and the most unique thing about them is that they are painted in the most random corners of the streets.

Penang International Container Art Festival has started bringing the street arts in Penang to even greater heights, literally - with murals painted on shipping containers stacked on top of each other!
According to The Star, the art installation is located in front of Prangin Mall in Jalan Dr. Lim Chwee Leong and is expected to draw locals and tourists to pose for photos or selfies!
Each of these container murals measures about 10 meters in height and can be found at five locations around Penang: Prangin Mall, Georgetown; Karpal Singh Drive, Jelutong; Kampung Terang, Balik Pulau; Dataran Pemuda Merdeka, Butterworth and Aspen Vision City, Batu Kawan.
All the artwork was done by seven Malaysian artists along with five of their counterparts from Russia, Canada, the Netherlands, and Ukraine.
The larger than life, eye-catching art was conceptualised by Penang Global Tourism and Can Can Public Art Team, aimed to revitalise the neighbourhoods of Penang and to boost tourism.
The murals at Karpal Singh Drive (Hope For The Future by Julia Volchkova) and Aspen Vision City (Connection by Caryn Koh) have both been included in the World’s 8 Best Street Art for January 2020 - second place and seventh place respectively, out of 80 other murals from around the world that were also nominated!
Impressive! So what are you waiting for? Plan a trip to Penang now as the murals will be taken down by May.
If you’re a person who loves arts or an art enthusiast, Penang should definitely be on your list this year!
