When it comes to food, Malaysian cuisine is no stranger to topping global lists, and for good reason.
Our unique blend of flavours, which draws from Malay, Chinese, Indian, and indigenous influences, has made dishes like nasi lemak, rendang, laksa, bak kut teh, roti canai, and kaya jam some of the most iconic and beloved in the world.

Recently, TasteAtlas, a renowned food guide, unveiled their list of the top 100 stews worldwide, and Malaysia's chicken curry (kari ayam) proudly claimed the top spot, earning an impressive 4.7-star rating. According to TasteAtlas, chicken curry is a beloved dish not only in Malaysia but also in neighbouring Indonesia. It's traditionally cooked in a clay pot, a method that allows the ingredients to meld together slowly, creating a depth of flavour that's both rich and comforting. The guide even recommends serving it with a steaming bowl of rice to complete the experience.
Rounding out the list, Indonesia's rendang earned 6th place with a 4.5-star rating. Known for its tender beef and aromatic spices, rendang is a staple in Indonesian cuisine, particularly among the Minangkabau people of West Sumatra.
Other Southeast Asian dishes also earned their spots on the list, with Thailand's Phanaeng Curry securing 2nd place. This dish is known for its creamy, peanut-flavoured sauce and thick texture, and its name is derived from the word ‘panang’, referring to an ancient method of preparing the chicken with its legs crossed.
Southeast Asia truly has a culinary legacy that’s hard to beat. Other dishes that made the list include Vietnam's Pho (11th), a fragrant noodle soup, and Cambodia’s Fish Amok (18th), a creamy fish curry wrapped in banana leaves.
However, despite the diverse array of stews from around the world, Malaysia's chicken curry stands out for its distinctive style and flavour. It's rich, spicy, and creamy – a versatile dish that pairs perfectly with rice, noodles, or even just a slice of bread. Depending on the state and occasion, the curry can vary, adding yet another layer of charm to this beloved dish.
So, it's clear that Malaysia's kari ayam is more than just a dish – it's an experience that captures the essence of our unique culinary identity.
