Musang King

The king of all durians is without a doubt the Musang King.

Musang King is the most well-known type of durian in Malaysia because of its buttery texture and the creamy flesh that melts into a flavour of bitterness and sweetness in your mouth.

Not only does this type of durian smell good, as it has a rich and sweet scent, it is also famous as desserts, mostly as ice-creams or in pastries.

D24

The D24 was the IT durian before the Musang King. Though people no longer look for the D24 durian, it still has a strong following of fans who remain loyal to its strong bitter flavour.

If you’re trying durian for the first time, you might want to try the D24 as the flavour isn’t too overpowering.

Black Thorn

This type of durian is recognisable from a mile away as its flesh is a palpable orange hue like the sun setting. Some say if you view the Black Thorn from the bottom, it looks like a star!

The black thorn’s flesh is thick and creamy. If you compare it to the other durians, the black thorn is sweeter and custardy, and it also has a lighter texture. On the price side, the black thorn can be equally or even more expensive than the Musang King.

Red Prawn

Originally from Penang, Red Prawn, also known as D175, is said to be the most expensive durian variety there is, beating out the mighty Musang King!

The durian is called “red prawn” because of the pinkish colour and curving shape of the flesh resembling a large red shrimp. The red prawn is sweet and is closer to being a dessert than the other durians in Malaysia.

Golden Phoenix

The Jin Feng, also known as the Golden Phoenix is a pale yellow-white durian.

It has a smaller seed than most durians and has a surprisingly strong, complex taste. The flesh is dry and thick, and you can smell it from a mile away due to its pungent aroma.

Which of these durians are your favourite?
