Setting Sail for a New Experience! Penang's First Floating Ferry Museum to Open Soon

For many of us, the memories of boarding the ferry to Penang during our childhood evoke a sense of wonder and nostalgia.

The thrill of driving our cars onto the ferry and feeling it gently sway as we crossed the shimmering waters to the island is an experience that remains etched in our hearts.

Now, that beloved ferry is set to embark on a remarkable new journey, as it is transformed into a floating museum, preserving its rich heritage for future generations. Printhero Merchandise (M) Sdn Bhd, known for its souvenir shops at popular tourist attractions such as Penang Hill and the National Museum, has been entrusted with this exciting project.

Currently docked at the Swettenham Pier Cruise Terminal (SPCT), the ferry will remain there temporarily until it is ready to be relocated to Tanjung City Marina, its permanent home. The Floating Museum is expected to open its doors to the public by the end of the year.

Once complete, the museum will offer a variety of attractions, including exhibitions, souvenir shops, a café, and picturesque photography spots, all situated within the historic ferry itself. A notable highlight will be 79 vibrant comic characters, hand-painted by local artist Mohd Azmi Mohd Hussin, peering out from the ferry's previously boarded-up windows, adding a whimsical touch to the experience.

The old ferries, some of which have been in service since the 1970s, were retired in late 2020, replaced by faster boats for modern convenience. Meanwhile, two other decommissioned ferries are currently being scrapped, while one vessel is undergoing maintenance in Lumut, Perak, and another is docked at Pengkalan Raja Tun Uda, with plans to transform it into a restaurant.

As this ferry sets sail into its new role as a floating museum, it aims to honour its storied past while offering a unique cultural experience for both locals and visitors alike.
