If your birthday falls on Malaysia’s most significant national dates, 31 August or 16 September, you’re in for something truly special this year.
A new initiative called Anak Merdeka Malaysia has been launched to celebrate Malaysians born on either National Day or Malaysia Day, recognising them as living symbols of unity and pride. Far more than just a birthday shoutout, this effort aims to turn these individuals into walking reminders of what it means to be Malaysian.

The programme is spearheaded by the Ministry of National Unity in collaboration with the National Archives of Malaysia, and it’s part of the lead-up to the National Day (31 August) and Malaysia Day (16 September) celebrations.
A Celebration for All Malaysians — If Your IC Matches the Date!
Anyone born on those two dates is eligible, no matter your age, background, or race. If your identity card reads 31 August or 16 September, you’re invited to register and take part.
Those who do will be celebrated during national-level events, receive exclusive commemorative gifts, and be publicly acknowledged for embodying the spirit of national harmony.
Minister of National Unity, Datuk Seri Aaron Ago Dagang, emphasised that this is not just a feel-good campaign. It carries a deeper message about the country’s collective identity, "We're not just acknowledging birthdays. We’re highlighting the voices and presence of Malaysians who reflect our shared national story.
“This is what Malaysia MADANI stands for, a country that honours its past, inspires optimism, and brings its people together," he shared.
The Ministry is encouraging all Malaysians to share this initiative with friends, family, and neighbours. If you know someone born on either of these historic dates, let them know they have a unique opportunity to be part of something meaningful.
