Much like how Klang is known for its bak kut teh, Subang Jaya for being a college student playground, and Desa Parkcity for its dog park, every little town in Malaysia has its own identity.

And this time, we’re zooming in on postcode 53300—Wangsa Maju! If you live in Wangsa Maju, or used to call this place home, then you’ll be able to relate to these seven things:

#1 Enjoying multi-layered burgers at Kaw-Kaw Burger

You can’t live in this area, and not have eaten this burger at least once.

#2 You’ll notice students everywhere

Especially if you’re hanging out at Desa Setapak. The notoriously packed area is the go-to spot for TARC and UIA students. BRJ Bistro Corner is practically their Mekdi!

#3 Desa Setapak vs. Wangsa

There’s a way to tell if someone is ‘orang lama’ or ‘orang baru’ in the neighbourhood—newbies would refer to Desa Setapak as Wangsa. Oldies would still refer to Desa Setapak as Desa Setapak.

#4 Everyone buys their phone from the same shop

There’s this iconic phone shop located in Desa Setapak that has been around for at least 10 years, where everyone has probably gotten their phones from! Are you one of them?

#5 We've all probably had or have a friend who lives in the famous Seksyen 2 Wangsa Maju flats

You might know someone who lives here.

#6 Chow tau foo: for foodies of the night

If you’re an adventurous foodie, you’d know that as soon as the clock strikes 10 at night, a foul aroma starts to permeate the air in Desa Setapak. An uncle with a bike and a huge kuali will start selling chow tau foo or smelly tofu.

#7 When Wangsa Walk happened and suddenly it was the ‘cool’ spot

Hey, remember when you used to hang out at BRJ or other malls, until Wangsa Walk came along? Now everyone comes here for their daily dose of retail therapy or caffeine fix. Lovey-dovey couples would have movie dates here (a colleague of ours even got proposed to while on a date at Wangsa Walk!).

The people of Wangsa Maju also has a new grocery shopping spot—because TESCO is in town! Talk about convenience!

The 60th TESCO is also the very first Superstore that is fully managed by Malaysians, spanning 2,000sq metres. If you often buy groceries, the chicken here is still priced at RM5.99 per kilo (since August 2016), while pricing for prawns starts from as low as RM24.99.

Here, you get to use the Scan & Shop app and the fully cashless Self-Service Checkout Counters. TESCO Wangsa Walk is the first Superstore that features these fully cashless counters!

By using the Scan & Shop app, you can scan your items yourself as you shop. You can also track the amount in your basket, which helps in managing your budget. When you’re done shopping, you can head over to the Self-Service Checkout Counters, provide a barcode (available through the app) and pay.

On top of debit and credit card payments, these counters also accept seven different e-wallet operators, namely AliPay, Boost, GoodCredit, Kiple, Mcash, TnG Digital and Vcash.

The Scan & Shop service is also available in Tesco Kepong and Tesco Extra Ampang, with more—including Superstores—to be rolled out soon.

So, besides Tesco, where is your fave hangout spot in Wangsa Maju? Kasi share sikit.
