The National Film Development Corporation (FINAS) made the announcement on 3 October, highlighting that the film, directed by Jin Ong, was selected following careful consideration by its expert film selection committee. This group, made up of industry professionals, was tasked with identifying the film best suited to showcase Malaysia’s cinematic talent on the global stage.

Produced by More Entertainments Sdn Bhd, Abang Adik features standout performances by Malaysian actor Jack Tan and Taiwan’s Kang Ren Wu. The film has already made waves internationally, earning 19 prestigious awards. These accolades highlight the film's extraordinary quality and solidify Malaysia's growing reputation in the global film scene.

Some of the notable awards Abang Adik has won include Best Film at the Asia New York Film Festival (22nd Uncaged Competition), as well as three major prizes at the 25th Far East Film Festival in Udine, Italy: the Golden Mulberry Audience Award, the Black Dragon Critics' Prize, and the White Mulberry Award for Best First Feature. Additionally, Kang Ren Wu earned Best Leading Actor at the Golden Horse Awards, often regarded as the Chinese-speaking world's equivalent of the Oscars.

Beyond critical acclaim, Abang Adik has also been a commercial success, grossing RM5.7 million in Malaysia, RM14.6 million in Taiwan, RM1.55 million in Hong Kong, and RM2.2 million in China. This strong box office performance further demonstrates the film’s universal appeal.

FINAS expressed its pride in the film’s success, stating, "This is Malaysia’s first production to break screening records. We hope this trend of producing high-value films continues, allowing Malaysia to compete internationally and shine on a larger stage."

The film, Ong’s directorial debut, is co-produced by renowned local actress Angelica Lee, herself a Golden Horse Award winner. Abang Adik tells the powerful story of two undocumented brothers fighting for citizenship in Malaysia. Through their struggles, the film beautifully portrays the deep bond they share while navigating the challenges of their uncertain futures.

Congratulations to the entire team behind Abang Adik for this monumental achievement. Their hard work and dedication have not only elevated Malaysian cinema but have also set the stage for even greater successes to come.
