Alamak! Malaysian Woman Finds 80% of Her Savings Destroyed by Termites, Most of Them RM50 Notes

Termites are notorious for their destructive tendencies, often targeting wooden structures and furniture. However, their appetite isn't limited to wood alone.

In a recent viral TikTok post by @madam_mama06, a woman showcased banknotes that had been ravaged by termites. The money belonged to her mother, who had been diligently saving for just two months before the unfortunate discovery.

In the video, it was evident that the termites had a peculiar preference. Most of the RM50 notes were significantly more damaged compared to other banknotes. This curious detail led to lighthearted speculation about the termites' tastes.

To cope with the distressing loss, @madam_mama06 used humour. She joked that the RM50 notes must have tasted like chocolate berries to the termites, while the RM20 notes resembled the flavour of Biscoff cookies.

Social media users were quick to ask how and why the termites targeted the cash. The woman admitted she was just as baffled. "The termites didn’t tell me in advance," she joked. "I would’ve stopped them if I knew. We’ve always put our piggy banks in the same place, but this time, they found their way to the banknotes."

Termites are attracted to cellulose, an organic compound found in wood, paper, and plant-based materials. Banknotes, being made of a blend of cotton and linen fibres, contain cellulose, making them an unexpected but viable food source for termites. This explains why the insects might chew through cash if they encounter it.

To prevent such incidents, it's essential to store money and other valuables in termite-proof containers, especially in areas prone to infestations. Regular inspections and maintaining a clean, clutter-free environment can also help deter termites.

While this incident provides an unusual glimpse into the world of termite behaviour, it also serves as a reminder to be vigilant. Termites can cause significant damage beyond just wooden structures, impacting anything that contains cellulose.

So, for anyone storing money at home, take extra precautions to protect your savings from these tiny but mighty pests.

And remember, if you suspect a termite infestation, it's best to consult a professional exterminator to address the problem promptly and effectively!
