Diabetes on the Rise! Viral Video of Teh Ais with a Whole Can of Condensed Milk Sparks Health Concerns

Diabetes is a growing health concern in Malaysia, with numbers rising at an alarming rate. According to recent health reports, approximately 3.9 million adults in Malaysia are living with diabetes—that’s about 1 in 5 Malaysians.

Obesity, a major risk factor for type 2 diabetes, is also on the rise, with nearly 50% of the adult population being overweight or obese. These statistics are worrying because diabetes, if left uncontrolled, can lead to serious complications such as heart disease, kidney failure, blindness, and even amputations.

A recent viral video circulating on social media serves as a stark reminder of the hidden dangers in some of our favourite sweet treats. The video, shared by Thai netizen @ananblinkblink, shows a vendor in Thailand preparing a glass of iced milk tea, or 'Teh Ais' as it is commonly known in Malaysia. While the drink is a popular refreshment, what shocked viewers was the vendor's preparation method—she poured an entire can of condensed milk into a single glass of tea.

The video, which has been viewed over 12.3 million times, highlights a concerning reality: many beloved beverages are loaded with sugar. Consuming excessive sugar over time increases the risk of obesity and diabetes, particularly when these sugary drinks become part of daily habits. According to the Ministry of Health Malaysia, high sugar consumption is one of the leading contributors to the nation's rising diabetes rates.

Many Malaysians enjoy sweetened beverages, especially during festive seasons like Ramadan, when breaking fast often involves sugary drinks and desserts. However, it is essential to be mindful of how much sugar we consume.

Experts recommend limiting added sugar intake to no more than 50 grams (around 12 teaspoons) per day for better health outcomes. A single serving of sugary drinks can easily exceed this limit, posing long-term risks to overall well-being.

While it is tempting to indulge in sweet treats, the consequences of unchecked sugar consumption are serious. Diabetes is not just about managing blood sugar levels—it can affect every part of your body. The complications can be life-altering and, in some cases, life-threatening.

Taking care of our health should not be a seasonal concern limited to Ramadan or other festive periods. It is a lifelong commitment. Making small changes, such as reducing sugar intake, choosing healthier drink alternatives, and maintaining an active lifestyle, can significantly lower the risk of diabetes and other chronic diseases.

Your health is your greatest asset—cherish it every day, not just during special occasions.
