Uncle Kentang Treats Care Home Seniors to a Beach Day and Invites Others to Lend a Hand

Uncle Kentang, whose real name is Kuan Chee Heng, is a well-known Malaysian philanthropist admired for his kind heart and efforts to help those in need. Over the years, he has organised countless charitable acts, from offering affordable ambulance services to supporting struggling families.

This time, his focus turned to the elderly who often spend their twilight years in care homes feeling forgotten and lonely.

In his latest initiative, Uncle Kentang and his team treated a group of residents from an elderly care centre to a much-needed day by the sea. Sharing the outing on his Facebook page, he explained that the idea was to give the seniors a chance to relive their youth and enjoy the simple pleasures of life.

He wrote that many elderly people in homes live in quiet despair, having worked for years only to face old age confined within four walls. “So, Saturday was their cheat day. I told them to smoke and eat freely. I even offered beer, but none of them wanted it. Some are in palliative care and nearing the end of their lives, so I just wanted them to relax and feel happy,” he shared.

The group not only enjoyed the sea breeze but were also treated to meals and red packets. Uncle Kentang revealed that he covered expenses amounting to RM1,300 for food, and together with red packets and transport, the trip cost around RM3,000, with eight cars and a bus used to bring everyone along.

The day was filled with laughter and heartfelt moments. Some of the seniors shared that it had been years since they last saw the ocean. The experience, Uncle Kentang said, was priceless.

He then encouraged members of the community, especially those who are financially able, to sponsor more trips like this for the elderly, particularly those battling illnesses. “If you are a business owner and have RM3,000 to spare, think about sponsoring such a trip under your company’s CSR. These moments bring immeasurable happiness to those who need it most,” he urged.

For Uncle Kentang, it is not about the money spent but about giving dignity, joy, and companionship to the elderly in their final chapters of life.
