The teens, both 18 years old, were able to reach out to the Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) after realising they were lost. Luckily, they still had mobile signal deep in the forest — which proved to be a game-changer. Not only did they manage to call for help, they also sent their precise location through WhatsApp, allowing rescuers to locate them without delay.

According to a statement reported by BERNAMA, the emergency call came in at around 1.16pm. A rescue team from the Bukit Mertajam Fire and Rescue Station was immediately mobilised to the site.

Penang JBPM assistant operations director, John Sagun Francis, confirmed that five personnel were involved in the operation, with help from nearby members of the public.

The rescue team reached the teens, guided by the location shared through the app, and successfully brought them back down. The entire operation wrapped up at 4.14pm. Both individuals were later reunited with their guardians, unharmed.

This incident is a strong reminder of how essential it is to stay connected and prepared during outdoor activities. Something as simple as having a charged phone and access to messaging apps can make all the difference in an emergency.
