On Saturday (July 30th), several bright objects believed to be pieces from a Chinese rocket that had fallen back on Earth were spotted across the sky in Kuching, Sarawak.
Videos of the objects falling at midnight recently went viral on social media.
People in Sarawak at first believed it to be a meteor shower or a comet but then realized that the debris was from China’s Long March 5B rocket, which was used to put a space module into orbit on July 24th.
According to the Borneo Post, the Long March 5B was used last Sunday to launch an uncrewed spacecraft, named Wentian, carrying the second of three modules China needed to complete its new Tiangong space station.
In a statement that was released on July 30th, the Malaysian Space Agency told Malaysians not to panic and that pieces of space debris re-entering the Earth’s atmosphere are normal.
