A devastating fire broke out in Putra Heights, Subang Jaya, on the second day of Hari Raya Aidilfitri, leaving destruction in its wake. The blaze, triggered by a Petronas gas pipeline explosion, spread rapidly, engulfing homes, melting vehicles, and charring trees.
Amidst the chaos, social activist Kuan Chee Heng, better known as Uncle Kentang, and his team of volunteers rushed in to assist in evacuations, risking their own safety to help those in need.
The situation on the ground was dire. Thick smoke clouded visibility, and the intense heat made every second critical. Residents, caught off guard, scrambled to escape, many barefoot and in a state of shock. Among them was an elderly woman who suffered severe burns to her hands, legs, and feet. Another resident, unable to locate her house keys, found herself trapped inside until firefighters managed to break in and rescue her.
Despite the dangers, emergency responders and volunteers worked tirelessly. A simple thumbs-up from a firefighter—who was once Uncle Kentang’s mentor—gave him the courage to push forward. Fire and Rescue Department officers battled the flames with precision, ensuring no one was left behind. A petite yet highly efficient firefighter led operations, while a young officer meticulously checked that his team was fully equipped with fire-resistant suits and breathing apparatuses. The police, under DSP Tan’s leadership, swiftly coordinated evacuations and provided crucial support.
The harrowing experience highlighted a critical issue: many Malaysians are ill-prepared for fire emergencies. Reflecting on the night’s events, Uncle Kentang urged the public to take simple precautions that could save lives:
-
Always keep house keys in a designated spot to prevent being trapped in an emergency.
-
Store essential documents in a grab-and-go bag for quick access.
-
Invest in a fire blanket and a burn kit—small measures that could make a huge difference in a crisis.
In the end, the swift response from firefighters, police officers, and volunteers helped prevent further loss of life. Their bravery and dedication serve as a reminder of the importance of preparedness and community support in times of disaster.
May all Malaysians stay safe, and a heartfelt thank you to the emergency responders and volunteers who put their lives on the line to protect others.
