At a time when hustle culture often pushes people to keep going no matter the cost, one elderly hawker in Puchong is being praised for doing the opposite by taking a short break to care for his mental health.

A photo shared by Reddit user @Blcksheep89 on the r/Bolehland subreddit captured a handwritten note taped to the front of the hawker’s Western food stall. In it, the stall owner openly shared that he would be taking a few days off to rest and recharge because he was “feeling down.”
“I am taking a 5-day break and am going out to relax,” the note read. “I apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.”
The actual dates listed were from June 30 to July 3, a four-day break that many online felt was more than well-deserved.
The post quickly gained traction, with Malaysians flooding the comments section to express their admiration for the hawker’s honesty and courage to prioritise his well being. “I find this to be so cute,” the original poster wrote. “Uncle is around 60 years old already and still prioritises self-care. I hope my uncle has a good rest!”
Others chimed in with encouraging messages like “Come back stronger!” and “Wishing him a peaceful break.”

In a society where conversations about mental health are still growing, especially among older generations, this hawker’s small act has sparked something bigger. It is a gentle but powerful reminder that it is okay to slow down, and that rest is not a weakness but a necessity.
