Mind Your Speed: PDRM Introduces Nationwide 'Saman Ekor' Operation to Penalize Speeding with RM300 Fines

Stay mindful of speed limits! The Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) has initiated its nationwide 'Saman Ekor' campaign to levy a RM300 fine on individuals caught speeding.

As reported by Berita Harian, the operation, overseen by the Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department (JSPT), was launched on Monday, August 21.

The campaign's objective is to penalize motorists who exceed speed limits, as defined under Section 79(2) of the Road Transport Act (APJ). This provision empowers the police to impose fines ranging from a minimum of RM300 to a maximum of RM2,000.

On the first day of the operation, August 21, a total of 8,718 traffic summonses were issued. Remarkably, 8,352 summonses were handed to drivers, 44 to motorcyclists, and 322 to commercial and service vehicle operators.

"Notification of a K170A summons for surpassing the speed limit will be dispatched to vehicle owners via the address on their driving licenses, as opposed to a ticket being issued to the driver at the scene," according to Deputy Director of Bukit Aman JSPT, Datuk Mohd Nasri Omar, as quoted by Bernama.

"All postal summonses for speeding violations can be settled at any police district traffic office across the country," he further elaborated.

This expedited approach to penalizing speeders has been coined the 'rapid-fire' operation. JSPT officers will employ high-speed cameras to capture instances of individuals surpassing the designated speed limit.

Mohd Nasri stressed that exceeding speed limits constitutes a major factor in road accidents in Malaysia, as drivers are more prone to losing control of their vehicles when speeding.

"All road users are urged to consistently adhere to established regulations and ensure strict compliance with road rules," emphasized the Deputy Director of Bukit Aman JSPT.

Staying within the speed limit is crucial for road safety. Excessive speed reduces a driver's ability to react to unexpected situations, increases the risk of accidents, and makes it harder to maintain control of the vehicle.

By adhering to speed limits, drivers contribute to safer roads for themselves and others, reducing the likelihood of accidents and their potentially devastating consequences. Remember, responsible driving not only avoids fines but also protects lives.
