Tun M Turns 100, Nasi Kandar Stall Celebrates with Curry-Soaked Rice Sculpture

While many Malaysians sent birthday wishes online to Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad as he turned 100 on 10 July, one humble nasi kandar restaurant took a more flavourful route to mark the special occasion.

Instead of the usual cake or candles, Nasi Kandar Sulaiman decided to honour the former Prime Minister with a unique edible tribute made entirely from their signature dish. In a Facebook post, they revealed a creative arrangement of white rice shaped into the number "100", celebrating Tun M's centennial milestone.

But the tribute did not stop there. The rice sculpture was generously drenched in curry, topped with two salted egg halves, and decorated with four green chillies on one side and seven on the other, a thoughtful nod to Tun M’s role as both Malaysia’s 4th and 7th Prime Minister.

The restaurant also expressed their admiration for Tun M’s longevity and legacy, pointing out that he is likely the only former Prime Minister in Malaysia to reach the age of 100. Their birthday wish was simple but heartfelt, hoping for continued blessings in his life.

The post quickly gained traction among Malaysians, with many netizens applauding the restaurant for their creative and culturally relevant way of celebrating such a historic figure.

Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, born in 1925 in Alor Setar, Kedah, served as Malaysia’s 4th Prime Minister from 1981 to 2003. He later returned to office in 2018 as the 7th Prime Minister, making history as the only person to hold the position twice and with the longest cumulative time in office.

He studied medicine at King Edward VII College in Singapore, where he met his future wife, Tun Dr Siti Hasmah. They tied the knot in 1956 in Kuala Lumpur and have since become one of the country’s most recognisable power couples.

From leadership to longevity, Tun M’s journey continues to inspire many Malaysians, including one creative nasi kandar shop that found a delicious way to honour his legacy.

Hope it’s not too late, Happy birthday Tun M and Tun Siti Hasmah!
