In a recent post on X by @stats_feed, Malaysia's beloved roti canai has been named the best bread in the world. It edged out India’s garlic naan, which ranked second, and Colombia’s pan de bono, securing third place.
An Indian netizen responded to the announcement, claiming that roti canai is essentially a variation of Aloo Paratha, a popular flatbread in India.

"Roti canai is just a paratha, specifically Malaysia’s version of Aloo Paratha. Yes, we Indians agree – Aloo Paratha is indeed delicious," the user commented.
In defence of roti canai, a Malaysian netizen fired back, asserting its distinct identity:
"Oh, so all flatbreads in the world are parathas, are they? What’s next – pizza is just naan with toppings? Roti canai has its own Malaysian identity, and we love it just as it is," they wrote.
Another Indian netizen weighed in, claiming that roti canai originated in India and was later introduced to Malaysia. This statement sparked a wave of responses from Malaysians, many of whom firmly defended the bread as a uniquely Malaysian creation.
One Malaysian user explained that roti canai was developed by Indian Malaysians, blending cultural influences to create a dish now iconic in Malaysia.
While debates about its origins persist, one thing is clear: roti canai has captured the hearts of food lovers worldwide, solidifying its status as a culinary treasure.
What’s your take on this? Do you think roti canai deserves the top spot, or do you side with garlic naan?
