M’sian With Learning Disability Becomes Teacher at 37 After Taking SPM 10 Times and Years of Hard Work

A touching story has been making its rounds online, reminding Malaysians of the quiet strength that often grows behind closed doors. It centres on a young man with a learning disability whose journey, shared by his sister, moved thousands.

She revealed that her brother’s school years were filled with hardship. He struggled to keep up in class, fell behind as a slow learner, and endured years of physical and emotional bullying. His SPM journey alone was a marathon. He sat for the exam ten times, refusing to let failure define him.

In her viral post, @DrAinunNasihah recounted how her brother once told their mother, during his tenth attempt, that it would be his last. Born breech and dealing with developmental challenges since birth, he often broke down under pressure but still, he tried again.

That determination carried him further than anyone expected. After SPM, he pushed himself through two rounds of STPM, eventually earning a degree and later completing the DPLI programme. Every step forward was hard won.

Throughout his early adult years, he worked wherever opportunity appeared, such as hospitals, schools, elderly care homes and even in the paddy fields with his father. These jobs were not glamorous, but they kept him moving toward something bigger.

When he finally attended the interview that would change his life, he openly shared that he held an OKU card for learning disability. The courage it took to say that, his sister said, was enormous. The moment he left the interview room, he ran straight to their mother and burst into tears, feeling relief and a sense that his long and exhausting battle might finally be coming to an end.

Today, at 37, he stands proudly as a school teacher, a title that once felt far out of reach.

His sister credits the unwavering support of their family, but she also highlights an important truth. No amount of help can lift someone who is not ready to rise. Her brother chose to keep going, even when the path seemed impossible.

And maybe that is the lesson for all of us. Life does not always unfold the way we expect, and the road to success is not the same for everyone. But as long as you keep moving, keep trying and keep believing, you might just surprise yourself.

The future has a way of rewarding those who never give up, and you never know what beautiful chapter is waiting for you next!
