Extra Charge for 'Tarik' Leaves M’sian Wondering If Life’s Getting Too Expensive

What started as a simple order for a cup of hot coffee turned into a surprisingly expensive experience for one woman in Sibu, Sarawak.

In a Facebook post that has since gained attention, the woman shared a photo of her receipt from a local stall. The total? RM7. But what caught people’s eye were the unusual charges that made up the bill.

Her cup of hot coffee was priced at RM4.30. However, because she requested for it to be tarik — a style of preparation where the drink is poured repeatedly to create froth — an additional RM0.70 was added to the total.

The surprises didn’t end there. The receipt also showed that she was charged twice for the use of tissues, contributing to the unexpectedly high total. With taxes included, her simple drink order came up to RM7.

Social media users were both amused and baffled by the situation.

Some pointed out the absurdity of charging extra for what is usually a common preparation method, while others made light-hearted jokes about what might come next, "Give it a few more months and stalls might start charging to wash your fork and spoon," one user wrote.

Another joked, "Next time just bring your own tissue and the froth from home."

Someone else added, "Lucky he only pulled the coffee once. Ten pulls and you’ll need a loan."

While some netizens expressed frustration over rising prices, others saw humour in the situation, using the post to comment on how the cost of living has started to show up in the smallest, most unexpected places.

It’s a reminder to always check the menu — and maybe the receipt — a little more closely.
