Mayor Rick Blangiardi of Oahu made the declaration to celebrate Chieng's dedication to showcasing the richness and diversity of multiracial cultures. Chieng, originally from Johor and having spent time in Singapore and the US, had previously lived in Oahu while working on his comedy-drama series, Doogie Kamehāloha, M.D. He has often referred to Hawaii as a "safe haven" for him and his wife.

During his acceptance speech, Chieng expressed his deep gratitude and his desire to give back to the community. "I hope with this proclamation, I can transition from being a 'grateful guest' to becoming a true 'member of the ohana'," he said.

Beyond his role on The Daily Show and his Netflix comedy specials, Chieng is known for his performances in films like Crazy Rich Asians, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, and the upcoming Kung Fu Panda 4.

His contributions to entertainment and his connection with Hawaii have earned him this special day of recognition. Happy Ronny Chieng Day!
