Malaysian Highlights Global Fuel Prices, Finds Local Rates Among the Cheapest

Starting 30 September, Malaysians will be able to refuel their vehicles with RON95 petrol at a subsidised price of RM1.99 per litre. The only requirement is to use your MyKad with a working chip when making the purchase.

Some netizens initially pointed out that the price drop is not particularly significant. However, others have reminded us to look at the bigger picture. When compared to many other countries, Malaysia’s fuel is still among the cheapest in the world.

A viral Threads post by Fazrul Azreen highlighted this point by sharing a fuel price comparison across several nations. In his post, he ended with the words, “Thank God, I’m grateful to be a Malaysian.”

The comparison showed that even before the adjustment to RM1.99, Malaysian fuel prices were already lower than those in countries like the United Kingdom, Australia, and many parts of Asia. The only nearby exception is Brunei, where fuel costs around RM1.57 per litre. But it is worth noting that Brunei’s small population of about 460,000 people and its heavy reliance on oil and gas revenue allows it to maintain that cap.

Finance Minister II, Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah, has also confirmed that RM1.99 per litre will remain the lowest subsidised price under the new system. Even if global crude oil prices fall, the government will not reduce the price further, as RM1.99 is the set benchmark. According to him, this initiative reflects the government’s commitment to easing the financial burden of Malaysians, particularly those in the B40 and M40 groups who rely on affordable fuel daily.

PSA for Malaysians: While we may sometimes compare and complain, our fuel remains among the cheapest globally. Subsidies are not limitless, and they come from public funds. Use fuel wisely, avoid unnecessary wastage, and remember that every ringgit saved at the pump can also be saved for your household.

Responsible consumption ensures that these benefits last longer for everyone!
