“These Dogs Are Friendly!” Klang City Council Offers Free Dog Adoptions

The Klang Royal City Council (MBDK) is taking a compassionate approach to managing stray dogs by offering free adoptions from its shelter, encouraging responsible pet ownership within the community.

Klang mayor Datuk Abd Hamid Hussain shared with The Star that MBDK’s Health Department Canine Unit has been actively rescuing dogs from the streets and giving them a second chance through their free adoption initiative.

Located at Bandar Sultan Suleiman in Port Klang, MBDK’s dog shelter serves as a safe haven for lost and stray dogs.

Abd Hamid emphasised that adopting these dogs not only supports the council’s efforts but also provides hope to the hundreds of strays still waiting for a loving home, “As of 18th February, our Canine Unit has rescued 139 stray dogs. Many of them are friendly and simply need a caring home. We hope more people will consider adoption rather than buying pets,” he said.

Most of the dogs at the shelter are brought in following public complaints. If they remain unclaimed for seven days, they are then put up for adoption, offering them a new lease on life.

To make adoption accessible, the process is straightforward. Prospective adopters need only select a dog they love at the council’s shelter, provide their personal details, ensure the dog is vaccinated, and pay a nominal fee of RM10 for the dog’s licence tag.

In addition to promoting adoptions, MBDK is running weekly vaccination programmes at half price and organising on-the-spot dog licensing events. These initiatives aim to help pet owners comply with licensing requirements and distinguish their pets from unlicensed strays.

Abd Hamid encouraged Klang residents and dog owners to take advantage of this initiative. Pet owners need to bring along a copy of their IC, a vaccination or health certificate from a veterinarian or the animal department, a colour photo of their home and pet dog, and their old pet certificate if applying for a renewal.

By supporting this initiative, the community can play a vital role in reducing stray overpopulation and ensuring that every dog gets the loving home it deserves.
