Farewell to Jay Fai! Bangkok’s Beloved Michelin-Starred Street Food Vendor to Close in 2025

When it comes to reasons for visiting Thailand, the list is extensive—stunning temples, vibrant nightlife, and a myriad of activities to keep you entertained.

Yet, nothing quite compares to the culinary delights that await, particularly the authentic Thai cuisine that has earned the country its gastronomic reputation.

Sadly, it seems that Bangkok is on the verge of losing a culinary gem: the beloved restaurant run by Jay Fai, renowned for her extraordinary crab omelette. Jay Fai, a Michelin-starred chef, has announced her plans to retire in 2025. The decision comes as a result of her advancing age, which has made it increasingly challenging to uphold the high standards expected of her esteemed establishment.

Additionally, the rising costs of premium ingredients have added to the strain on her business…

In a poignant twist, her daughter has chosen not to continue the family legacy, raising further concerns about the future of this iconic eatery.

Among those lamenting the potential closure is Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra, who, ironically, has yet to experience the delights of Jay Fai’s kitchen. She expressed her desire to visit before it’s too late, hoping her friends can help her queue for a taste of the acclaimed dishes.

Thapanee Kiatphaibool, the Governor of the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), echoed these sentiments, stating that Jay Fai’s retirement would be a significant loss for Bangkok’s street food culture. Her restaurant has long served as a beacon for promoting tourism and showcasing the richness of Thai cuisine, earning global recognition for its exquisite offerings.

For those who have yet to savour the culinary magic at Jay Fai’s, time is of the essence. Don’t miss out on the chance to experience her legendary dishes before this chapter comes to a close!
