“Is This Normal?” Chinese Tourist Records Bus Driver Playing Game Mid-Drive on KL-Penang Route

The recent fatal crash involving students from Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) has shaken the nation, prompting many Malaysians to speak up about the unsafe practices of some bus drivers.

Following the horrific incident on June 9, which claimed the lives of 15 UPSI students and injured dozens more when their bus overturned in Gerik, Perak, social media has since been flooded with videos and photos exposing similar reckless behaviours by other bus drivers.

One particular video that has gone viral shows a long-distance bus driver allegedly playing a mobile game while ferrying passengers from Kuala Lumpur to Butterworth, Penang.

The clip was reportedly taken by a Chinese tourist and later shared by local newscaster Tan Chia Yong, who expressed shock and disappointment, “Are all Malaysian drivers like this?” the tourist had asked. In response, Tan clarified that this is clearly a case of one irresponsible individual—but also a warning sign that something must be done.

Netizens were quick to demand action. Many called for the installation of surveillance cameras in buses and proposed systems that can disable mobile phone usage when the driver is behind the wheel. Some even questioned how drivers with multiple traffic offences—like the one involved in the UPSI crash, who had 18 summonses including 13 for speeding—were allowed to operate at all.

“This isn’t the first time we’re hearing about reckless bus drivers. Why does it take a tragedy for action to be taken?” wrote one concerned user.

While public anger is justified, it’s important to remember that not all Malaysian bus drivers are negligent. Many work long hours and prioritise safety, doing their best to ensure passengers reach their destinations safely.

Still, with so many buses on the road each day, constant supervision is nearly impossible. We hope the authorities and bus companies take serious steps to address this issue before another life is lost.
