Many Malaysians visit the highlands to escape the heat, sip tea with a view, walk through flower gardens and enjoy fresh fruits and vegetables straight from local farms. Its relaxing charm and natural beauty make it a favourite holiday spot for both locals and tourists.
Now, Cameron Highlands has received international recognition. Digital travel platform Agoda has announced its list of top rural destinations in Asia, and Cameron Highlands took the number one spot.
According to Agoda, more travellers are choosing rural areas, especially those in the mountains or hills, because they want a break from busy city life and hope to experience nature and local culture up close.
For Cameron Highlands, Agoda highlighted its cool climate and its well-known tea plantations that stretch across rolling hills. Visitors can explore the green landscapes, wander through colourful flower gardens and enjoy fresh produce from the many farms in the area. The highlands also offer quiet hiking trails and charming small villages for visitors who want a slower, more peaceful getaway.
The rankings were based on Agoda’s data from accommodation searches across eight different Asian markets. Only rural destinations with populations under 50,000 were included, and the data was collected between 15 February and 15 August 2025.
Here are Agoda’s top 8 rural destinations in Asia:
