Most of us have vivid memories of at least one fearsome teacher… Maybe that’s why versions of the classic expression “the dog ate my homework” have been around for years.

Today, the “dog ate my homework” is used as a stock example of the kind of silly excuses schoolchildren give for why their work isn’t finished. Very rarely do people say, “My dog ate my homework” and expect it to be taken literally.
The expression is an example of a typically flimsy excuse.
A photo that was posted a few years back recently gained a lot of attention.
The photo shows a handwritten letter by a student sent to his teacher explaining that he could not finish his homework because his neighbour’s neighbour’s cat had “eaten” his work sheet.
“It’s not that I don’t want to finish my work. But my neighbour’s neighbour’s cat had eaten my homework.
“And so with that, teacher will you forgive my neighbour’s neighbour’s cat because he had eaten my homework?” the letter reads.
Netizens were amused and even shared their own experience of making up ridiculous stories to their teachers because they didn’t finish their school work, “I once told my teacher that my grandmother accidentally took my homework back to our hometown.”
“I told my teacher that my father didn’t let me finish my homework because we had to go to sleep. I don’t think my teacher believed me, but she just let it go,” another person said.
